The World Wandering Gourmet Chef Committed Suicide

World famous chef, author, and travel show host, Anthony Bourdain, was found dead in Paris on Friday from an apparent suicide. The host of shows such as No Reservations and The Layover who was in the city shooting his latest episode of the CNN series Parts Unknown was found dead in his hotel room at the age of 61.

Bourdain was no stranger to “illicit” substances, having been very candid about his past drug use and sometimes even focusing entire segments of his programs to the different ways that marijuana is being used around the world. From covering how hashish is an important part of the culture in Morocco to learning more about bhang in India, Bourdain never shied away from showing us more about cannabis use than the networks wanted him to.

CNN confirmed Bourdain’s death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide. Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series, “Parts Unknown.” His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

“It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain,” the network said in a statement Friday morning. “His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller.

“His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Bourdain joined CNN five years ago. In an email to employees, the network’s president, Jeff Zucker, remembered him as an “exceptional talent.”
